The Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) is a unique global program dedicated to protecting academic freedom. It arranges, funds, and supports fellowships for threatened and displaced scholars at partnering higher education institutions worldwide. These fellowships provide a temporary academic position (typically 9-12 months, renewable for a second year) in a safe environment, allowing scholars from any country and academic discipline to continue their teaching, research, and publishing activities. The program aims to preserve knowledge and ensure that these scholars’ voices and ideas are not silenced due to persecution or conflict.
Tasks
Fellows will undertake various academic activities at their host institutions, which may include:
- Conducting research in their field.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
Applicants are generally required to hold a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field.
Experience
Candidates must have significant teaching and/or research experience at a university, college, or other institution of higher learning. They should also possess an established record of published research and demonstrate superior academic accomplishment or promise. Crucially, applicants must be facing or have recently fled from immediate, targeted threats to their lives and/or careers in their home countries or countries of residence.
Additional Information
The IIE-SRF fellowship includes a grant of up to USD $25,000, individual health insurance coverage, and support for relocation to the host institution. Most awards are eligible for renewal for a second and final year. Host institutions are typically required to provide matching support of equal or greater value (which can include salary, housing, or other benefits). IIE-SRF also provides professional development support, career mentorship, and networking opportunities.
Eligibility Exclusions: IIE-SRF typically cannot consider applications from individuals seeking to continue their studies (including Ph.D. study), those displaced for more than two years, or those holding citizenship or permanent residency in a safe second country.
How to Apply: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. To be considered for the September 2025 Selection Committee meeting, submit your application by July 27, 2025. Required materials include an application form, current CV (with detailed academic and publication history), a thorough academic statement, a detailed personal statement explaining threats faced, a copy of your highest degree, research samples, and a minimum of three reference letters (academic/professional and personal, submitted directly by referees).
