Background & Job Description

Greenpeace International (GPI) is inviting applications for the 2026 Legal Internship Cohort, which will host six interns in its Legal Unit. The internship runs for six months, starting in either January 2026 or June 2026, and offers a monthly stipend of €800 NET.

The Legal Unit advises Greenpeace International and, when required, national and regional Greenpeace organisations on campaign strategies and organisational legal issues. Interns will gain exposure to proactive and defensive legal strategies, compliance matters, governance issues, and advocacy for civil society rights. The program is hybrid, with the option to work from the GPI Amsterdam office and virtually.


Tasks

Interns will:

  • Support campaign, communications, and organisational lawyers.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis on international environmental and human rights law.
  • Contribute to projects addressing corporate accountability and government responsibility.
  • Assist in developing legal resilience against SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation).
  • Gain exposure to governance, compliance, intellectual property, and NGO law practices.
  • Contribute to cross-cutting legal projects with high levels of responsibility and independence.

Education and Certification

  • Law student towards the end of studies or a recent law graduate (LLM, JD, or equivalent).
  • Eligibility to work in the Netherlands: must have a Dutch social security number (BSN) or be able to obtain one quickly (EU and Swiss nationals may qualify).

Experience

  • Strong background in at least one of the following:
    • International environmental law
    • International human rights law
    • Public international law (including the law of the sea)
    • Civil law, torts, contracts, media law, information law
    • Freedom of expression law
  • Fluency in English is required; Dutch is required for at least two interns. Other languages are an advantage.
  • Exceptional analytical, research, and writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Information

  • Internship duration: 6 months, full-time (40 hours/week).
  • Stipend: €800 NET per month.
  • Hybrid setup: partly remote, with the option to work from the Amsterdam office.
