Background & Job Description

The MIF Research Fellowship Program is designed to bring non-Japanese PhD researchers to Japan for a 6-month fellowship between June 2026 and March 2027. Fellows will conduct academic research at a host institution in Japan, deepening their expertise while fostering cross-cultural academic exchange. This fellowship is funded by the Matsumae International Foundation and is open to all nationalities that meet the eligibility criteria.

Tasks

Selected fellows will:

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Must hold a Ph.D. (Doctoral Degree) at the time of application

Experience

  • Must be 45 years old or younger (born in or after 1980)
  • Must have no prior long-term stay in Japan (short visits for conferences/tourism allowed)
  • Must have English or Japanese language proficiency
  • Must be employed in home country and return after fellowship
