Background & Job Description

The Senior Legal Counsel will be a key player in ensuring the Foundation’s global operations are legally sound and aligned with its strategic goals. This role requires an adaptable and proactive professional to provide timely and practical legal advice across multiple jurisdictions. The successful candidate will support organizational growth and transformation, navigate complex international regulations, and help manage legal risks associated with a non-profit operating on a global scale. Tasks

The Senior Legal Counsel will be responsible for a wide array of legal and compliance activities, including:

  • Legal Counsel: Providing timely and practical legal advice on matters covering contract law, corporate governance, intellectual property, international development, and government compliance across over 20 countries.
  • Global Legal Operations: Offering specialized advice on not-for-profit regulations and reputational considerations.
  • Employment Law: Providing global employment law guidance, including engaging and instructing local external counsel as required.
  • Organizational Change: Advising on the legal components of organizational changes, such as entering or exiting jurisdictions, and staying abreast of relevant legislation.
  • Internal Investigations: Assisting the General Counsel in managing internal investigations related to safeguarding, financial crime, whistleblower, and disciplinary matters.
  • Process Improvement: Enhancing contract management processes by simplifying templates, improving usability, and delivering training to staff.
  • Strategic Support: Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to provide strategic legal support on projects, including the development of new funding models.
  • Risk Management: Identifying and advising on risk mitigation strategies to ensure legal compliance.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

Candidates must hold a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or equivalent, and possess an active practising license.

Experience

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of six years of post-qualification legal experience. Key Experience Required:

  • In-house Counsel: Experience in an in-house counsel role at a top-tier law firm, international NGO, or a complex multi-jurisdictional organization is highly desirable.
  • Diverse Legal Domains: Demonstrated experience in a variety of legal fields, including contracts, cross-border transactions, corporate governance, employment law, and organizational change.
  • International Jurisdictions: Exposure to legal work within key jurisdictions outside Australia, such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Kenya, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
  • Regulatory Navigation: Proven ability to navigate legal and regulatory frameworks in diverse international contexts with an adaptable and solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Social Impact: A genuine passion for legal practice within a mission-led, social impact organization is essential.
