Background & Job Description
This internship programme is offered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under its Inclusive Growth Programme, hosted within the Regional Bureau for Africa. The roles support Africa’s development agenda by contributing to policy work, economic transformation, and regional integration initiatives.
The internship is linked to global frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Africa’s African Union Agenda 2063.
Three internship opportunities are available:
- 2 international remote roles
- 1 in-person role based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Interns will work within the Inclusive Growth and Extractives Team (IGET) at the Regional Service Centre for Africa.
Tasks
Interns will support different thematic areas depending on placement:
Blue Economy & Climate Growth
- Conduct research on sustainable ocean economies
- Support preparation for Africa Blue Economy Week
- Draft policy briefs and technical reports
- Engage with governments and regional partners
Development Planning & Governance
- Assist with development planning frameworks
- Analyze SDG and Agenda 2063 integration
- Prepare reports, dashboards, and policy insights
Regional Value Chains & Trade
- Research SMEs and regional trade systems
- Support AfCFTA-related initiatives
- Draft technical and policy reports
General Responsibilities
- Conduct research and data analysis
- Prepare reports and communication materials
- Participate in team meetings
- Support project coordination and documentation
Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Enrolled in a postgraduate programme (Master’s or equivalent), OR
- Recent graduate (within one year) in:
- Economics
- Development Studies
- Public Policy
- Related fields
Experience
- No formal work experience required
- Background in research, policy, or development is an advantage
Skills
- Strong analytical and research skills
- Good communication and writing ability
- Teamwork and adaptability
- Interest in sustainable development
Language
- Fluency in English required
- French is an advantage
